Assassin’s Creed the movie hits theaters December 21, 2016, which is a less than a month away.
Assassin’s Creed is an action-adventure film based on the award-winning gaming series. The Assassin’s Creed series currently consists of nine main games, seventeen spin-off games and a few short films with various transmedia projects. Each of the main games have also been developed into novels that enrich the story line of each individual game. Assassin’s Creed is an extremely successful gaming franchise with over 70 million copies sold within the last ten years.
Assassin’s Creed the movie is directed by Justin Kurzel and produced by Ubisoft Motion Pictures. The starring cast includes Marion Cotillard as Dr. Sophia Rikkin, Mickael Fassbender as Callum Lynch/Aguilar, Essie Davis as Mary Lynch.
The story starts when Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) discovers he is a descendant of the secret assassins society. He was able to unlock genetic memories which allowed him to relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar de Nerha, a 15th century Spanish Assassin. Lynch relives Aguilar’s memories in order to obtain the knowledge and skills required to become an assassin. His goal is to take on the Templars (the bad guys) which is consistent with the video game series.
But what should we be expecting from the movie? The movie will tell a new story within the Assassin’s Creed universe. A new character was created exclusively for the movie, so fans of the gaming series won’t have a direct comparison to hold the movie up to. In an interview from UBIBLOG Kurzel said “I hope the fans see that we’ve respected what Assassin’s Creed is, but also I want them to be excited about the fact that this is a film.” Kurzel goes on to add “it’s a new story with new characters. They deserve to see us reaching for something new and different so they can have a new experience.”
Director Justin Kurzel wanted the movie to be as real as possible. In one particular scene Kurzel did not want to relay on any special effects. This scene being where Callum (Michael Fassbender) is trapped and has to make the leap of faith. Stuntman Damien Walters was hired to perform one of the highest free fall stunts in 35 years. Check out the performance in the video below.
